#SupremeCourt temporarily blocks #deportations of #Venezuelans held in northern #Texas

"The Supreme Court on Saturday blocked, for now, the deportations of any Venezuelans held in northern Texas under an 18th-century wartime law.

"In a brief order, the court directed the Trump administration not to remove Venezuelans held in the #BluebonnetDetentionCenter 'until further order of this court.'

"Justices #ClarenceThomas and #SamuelAlito dissented.

"The high court acted in an emergency appeal from the American Civil Liberties Union contending that immigration authorities appeared to be moving to restart removals under the #AlienEnemiesAct of 1798. The Supreme Court had said earlier in April that deportations could proceed only if those about to be removed had a chance to argue their case in court and were given 'a reasonable time' to contest their pending removals.

" 'We are deeply relieved that the Court has temporarily blocked the removals. These individuals were in imminent danger of spending the rest of their lives in a brutal Salvadoran prison without ever having had any due process,' ACLU lawyer Lee Gelernt said in an email."

Justices #ClarenceThomas & Samuel #Alito dissented.

Lawyers for the #ACLU, saying that a new group of Venezuelan men had been “loaded on to buses, presumably headed to the airport,” filed an emergency petition to SCOTUS, asking the justices to step in & issue an immediate pause on any deportations under a wartime powers #law the #Trump admin has been using to try to expel them.

But no, this was on #Biden's watch. I kept my mouth shut during the elections, partly not knowing, partly thinking "Anything beats Trump".
But what a stinker.

WASHINGTON (The Borowitz Report)—In a rare public statement, Clarence Thomas warned on Thursday that the whipsawing stock market could force billionaires who have hosted him and Samuel Alito on luxury cruises to sell their yachts.

“I usually bite my tongue, but the threat to these cruises impels me to speak out,” he said. “There’s a human cost here the public needs to know about.”

Thomas reported that Alito’s wife is “in a state of panic” about losing her superyacht vacations, adding, “She’s been flying their flag upside down all week.”

As for his own wife, Thomas said, “Ginni is mad as hell, and you don’t want to make Ginni mad. She’s already tried to overthrow one government.”

I'd like to repeat: if Justice Kavanaugh’s comment is correct, even #ClarenceThomas and #SamuelAlito agree #Trump’s goons cannot deport without providing non-citizen victims the opportunity to challenge it in court.

The Brian Tyler Cohen headline is correct. This court decision is really consequential. Trump's dumb and ignorant executive order is being found to be blatantly unconstitutional. Even the greatest simpleton ought to be able to see it but we're just not sure about Samuel Alito and Clarence Thomas. Time will tell. It is going well so far.

In other words, Justices Samuel #Alito, #ClarenceThomas, #NeilGorsuch & #BrettKavanaugh don’t believe in the power of the #judiciary, their own power, or the #SeparationOfPowers.

They believe that the president is in fact above the #law — as long as that president is #Trump.

In his dissent Monday, #ClarenceThomas said lower courts continue to follow Hill despite the court’s repudiation of that ruling in #Dobbs.
 “I don’t see what is left” of the 2000 decision, he wrote, adding that the court “declines an invitation to set the record straight on Hill’s defunct status.”
