asking #Japanese #speakers here: Is there a tool where you can look up the, for lack of better term, etymology of #kanji? As in, how those symbols came to match with the meaning? Like, 日 is pretty easy since it's based on the sun, according to my old professor. She showed us how it evolved from a circle with a dot in it to the current Kanji. Is there an online resource that will do similar? I just heard an explanation about 強い and I can't tell if it was a mnemonic device, or actual history.

Continued thread

Oh no wait, further update to the #Heisig #Kanji mental maps: I figured out how to visualize the 犬 character as a chihuahua... just make it Gidget, the Taco Bell dog, who wore a Taco-Marxist beret in those 90s commercials.

If you are not of the age or nationality to remember these, just imagine a Chihuahua in a beret saying "yo quiero taco bell" or "viva gorditas" in an incongruously deep voice. Do not ask yourself what a gordita even is, it does not matter, like life.

Attention Everyone using the #Heisig system to memorize #Kanji, the hieroglyphics of the mysterious east:

While Dr. Heisig has taught that the character 大 ("large") should be visualized as a Saint Bernard and the character 犬 ("dog") should be visualized as a chihuahua, since I can never remember that, I propose the following associations instead:

大 is now a giant, fluffy golden retriever.
犬 is now a little corgi wearing a beret (the drop)

please adjust your mental maps.
