#ScribesAndMakers 10, Book cover you like.
I'm absolutely smitten with Andrew Lang's original 1900s fairy book covers, charmingly illustrated by Henry Justice Ford. So much so, that I've taken to recreating and restoring the covers in detail so I can make them into notebooks and preserve them.
Currently, I have three restoration designs, and I am working on the lilac one. For which I really could use some more detailed images, so if anyone has one.
#biblio #livresanciens #typographie #histoireduLivre #rare #books #oldbooks #library
Auch Alexander von Humboldt hätte das Chronoscope World empfohlen!

Hello from Dublin!
Yesterday we went to Marsh’s Library, a reference library with some of the oldest printed books in the world! We couldn’t touch the books, but photos were allowed.
This library was also caught in the crosshairs of the rebellion in 1916, so some of the books have bullet holes in them (none shown).
Such a cool place!
Other things we did:
-Dublin Castle
-St. Patrick’s Cathedral
-Various gardens
-Tasty food

Damn, I found https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/bookshelf/147 … I guess I'll be unavailable for the next few weeks
found an old book with German "kitchen songs" and updated my relevant blog entry:

Am browsing a Victorian sewing manual, as I am wont to do. Have one of those little decorative multi-tier tea service or cake stands taking up space in the cupboard, unused? Well, do the Victorians have a solution for you!
Embellish the heck out of the contraption and put some sewing things on it.
Beautiful old magazine-books for four pence, over 130 years old. So nice!
"In the 1890s British publisher S. W. Partridge & Co. of London took the unusual step of publishing Isabella Alden’s novels as pamphlets." #Pansy
Printed by Hazell, Watson &Viney, Ld. London and Aylesbury.
Just read about them:

I need a semi-serious reassurance that the floor of my apartment won't collapse after another box (or three) of paper in the shape of old cooking books and some other books I've found while already in the rabbit hole.
Yesterday, looking for vague or definitive answers about the width and widening point of Victorian bicycling trousers, I also came across this book from the 1970s. "I'm just gonna leave this until morning", I thought, thus leaving myself a surprise because I forgot about it.
Shall delve into it and see if there's valuable data for us all in there!
We have discovered a little treasure from @steggy ‘s mom’s library. The “Radiation Cookery Book” from 1936.
It’s none of the cool things you might hope for like
- Cooking with Uranium
- Cooking using your radiators in the Great Depression.
It appears to have been published by a consortium of gas stove manufacturers.
Ladies, gentlemen and persons with gender beyond the ken of cis minds: I am firmly back on my bullshit, browsing Victorian sewing manuals.
Sure, I already found what I wanted, but I also have a dozen other tabs open!
OMG THIS IS AMAZING

I'm unclear as to when this all happened, as the Medievalists article is undated (my phone doesn't display a date anyway). If I find out more, I'll amend.
Can't wait to see what tidbits of thought make their way from this find into the world at large.

I bought, and read, a book that was over 100 years old. It cost me £3.
Honestly I'm amazed by this. We must never not make books.
I love my e reader. But blimey. Paper books lasting 100+years and just being fine. Wonderful.

I came across this delightful gem not long ago and had to share it. A lovely, tactile book, this Dictionary of Advertising & Printing was published in 1930 by Pitman.
