A Red-tailed Hawk, hunting over Sibley Volcanic Preserve, Orinda, California. Looking slightly up as it glides by, its eyes looking for food - grey sky behind. The bird has very patterend cream and brown wings, with dark at the front edge and bands of light and dark going to the back edge. Underneath the same, with white chest and more brown around the head. Hooked bill of a raptor, and a not very red tail, for a red tailed hawk - even in other shots seeing the top side.

A Great Blue Heron, a large long legged water bird with long neck and bill too. The body is light grey-blue, the neck has a pink tinge towards the head, with the front of the neck having a herringbone light/dark pattern which also extends to the chest. The face is white capped and cheeked, with a dark blue-grey above the back from the eye, leading to two thin, long plumes. The bill is yellow lower and darker above and is also catching the sun at the tip in this shot. White plumes also hang dwon from the lower neck and chest. Standing on a rock with calm water behind which is out of focus. Some ice plant vegetation in the foreground.

The Night Heron is blue capped and backed, with ligther sides and fronts and a short pointed bill. Greenery fills the rest of the background with some ice plant flowers out of focus.

A Great Blue Heron, a large water bird with long legs, neck and bill, seen here flying over grass in an estuary area - actually with two other herons but I only managed to get a good shot of a couple (coming later). The bird has a huge wingspan (6ft) and the wing feathers are darker bue-grey at the ends and along the rear of the wing, with the inner wing matching the back and tail. The legs are trailing and the yellow bill can be seen and the mostly white head, with a darker cap.
