A carnivorous ‘bone collector’ caterpillar dresses in the remains of its prey

A new carnivorous caterpillar that wears the remains of its prey has been dubbed the “bone collector.”

The odd insect is only found on the Hawaiian island of Oahu. It creeps along spiderwebs, feeding on trapped insects and decorating its silk case with their body parts.

20/04/2025 - An afternoon walk that was so nice we didn't get back until after the sun set. The weather at the coast was lovely today. Not too warm, not too cold, a nice breeze and plenty of sunshine. Not too busy either. Lots of wonderful wild flowers and birds to see. We took tea with us as I guessed we wouldn't want to rush.

After a near miss, the wee Spanish mutt had a trip to the vet. This sadly means for the next few months there will be no more running or walkies in new and unchecked areas. Because she and I walked straight through a row of pine processionary caterpillars. Lucky I had shoes on, she didn't.

You don't want to touch them as the allergic reaction is extremely painful and for pets who get the little furry hairs on their tongue, it could be deadly, at best they need to get some of their tongue cut off. As the vet said it's like a fire in their mouth. Just a FYI so not do a search for what it looks like when a dog is suffering.

Luckily, nothing to report, as the reaction would be instant, but as the vet said better safe than sorry. They were also surprised that the caterpillars are out this early, the joy of fecking up the environment, eh.

Megalopyge crispata (black-waved flannel moth—family Megalopygidae) early-instar caterpillar on foliage of Carya tormentosa (mockernut hickory), the caterpillar has long white wispy hairs when young, they feed on shrubs & trees like oaks, plums etc. It is found along the east coast of the United States, and as far inland as Oklahoma, they have venomous spines, can appear teardrop-shaped and grow to about 1.5 inches long.
