The largest hawk-moth in the UK came to visit last night. A veritable behemoth. The size of your palm ... the pink, black and brown beauty that is the PRIVET HAWK-MOTH.

Overhead shot of a very large arrowhead shaped moth on a hand with its wings close to its body forming a tent shape. It has largely brown wings which have a lighter brown band running down the top leading edge from head to wing tip and across the bottom edge of the wing. In between the lighter bands there is a darker brown band running diagonally from abdomen to wing tip. There are some thin vertical black lines running through the darker brown band and a horizontal black line separating the darker patch from the lower lighter patch. The head is black leading to a bright pink and black striped abdomen, the stripes intersected by a strip of brown running vertically top to bottom.
