As one of the UK's best-selling bike brands we thought it time to give @halfords_uk Carrera electric bikes a look. Here we review the £1,199 Impel im-3.1, a commuter bike that has a decent-sized battery and tyres that will open up gravel path shortcuts if you'd prefer to take the scenic route.

Catch the link in our story for our tester's thoughts.

Why do I ever bother with Halfords?

Most common brake pads? Double RRP and guess what, also out of stock.

Bicycle service? Hand it back in worse condition than it went in.

And get treated like scum by most of the staff because I don't want to give out my email JUST TO BUY A DAMN PART.

Would I buy from the independent bicycle across the road? Of course!
But he's never open, never has what I need, and only deals in second hand tripe bought from an Argos catalog.

I've had my new e-bike since the end of August (the old one was returned to #Halfords #Halfrauds as unfit for use after it was replaced once and the second bike also failed after 250 miles of use.

I've now done 380 miles on it since getting it.

Due to DIY and other things getting in the way, there's often long gaps between rides.

But now that better weather is here... I'm hoping that I'll be doing 30-40 miles a week on it... When Work & DIY jobs are out of the way.

11 miles so far this week

Took my bike to Halfords on 12th March to get it repaired.

They kept saying it would be repaired, but they never got back to me.

I had to chase them so many times just to get the story that the supplier said nothing to them. I can believe that, but why they never bothered chasing it up when that was their own self-imposed deadline is beyond me.

Eventually yesterday I asked to my bike back as they were never going to fix the issue.

#Today was a busy 1.Decided to cycle from the #MarinaMarket to #TheBlackMarket to #Aldi to #MahonPoint.
Some of it was on cycle lanes, some on the #MarinaGreenway, some on roads without cycle lanes. The cycle lanes sections were terrifying but the roads were panic-inducing. People zone out so much in cars. Picked up a cycling rain jacket & full finger gloves in Aldi (& #yarn!) Then went to #Halfords for a new bike. They don't cater to women. I was ready to drop €2-3k on an upgrade.

I had a dashcam fitted last week at #halfords in Inverness and yesterday I noticed that the rear camera wasn't showing as connected.
After talking to the manufacturers it was recommended that I get it checked. Went to Halfords in Elgin this afternoon where the problem was rapidly identified and remedied, the very helpful young man then did a great job of fitting the cable where it should have been in the 1st place.
He is a great advert for Halfords and I'm delighted with the work.

#Ebike update number... feels like about 50.

I'm getting my refund.

Basically #Halfords or rather #Halfrauds utterly ignored the CC company. They were contacted and given 2 weeks to respond... the didn't bother. They were sent the CC indemnity and ignored that too.

Meanwhile... after 6 weeks. Their manager finally emailed to say 'nothing wrong with bike' you need to collect it and get an 'independent report done at your expense'

Nope... not happening.

#EBike update

#Halfords or rather #Halfrauds are still playing dumb and saying nothing. Utterly failing to attempt to contact me once in 5 weeks... in spite of emails stating otherwise.

The latest excuse is 'Manager on holiday'... yeah... for 5 fucking weeks apparently.

Waiting for CC company to credit the refund back. They're taking their time too.

Meanwhile, this bike is on the shortlist of replacements.

@dutchbarracuda 4 weeks or so now.

The CC company have all of the reciepts, screen shots and log of the online chat.

I had an email from #Halfords #halfrauds this morning again saying that some one would call me and that the 'manager' was on holiday.

I told them I wasn't interested, the manager must be very lucky to be on holiday still after more than 4 weeks and that I want everything in writing... not some false promises made on the phone.

E-Bike update

As expected... #Halfords #Halfrauds have once again failed to contact me as promised last week.

That's ok... because as of tomorrow... It's been 15 days since I returned the bike as defective and rejected it and asked for a refund.

So tomorrow, call the CC company and push through the section 75 claim that I started last week.

I now have chat logs with halfords showing they would contact me and would raise the refund request... and have done neither.

Fuck Halfords.

E-Bike update.

#Halfords or rather #Halfrauds have been utterly silent on the refund. Haven't bothered calling me once in a week.

Can't call them as you just get diverted to a call centre and can't speak to the store itself.

So I called the credit card company to begin the section 75 process. It's covered under that protection.

I just need to contact halfrauds via their webchat and get a record of the chat of me stating I'm rejecting the bike as not fit for purpose and so forth.

E-Bike update

#Halfords or should that be #Halfrauds have remained silent on the bike.

Never contacted me as promised and are utterly silent over me returning the 2nd bike to have failed after less than 400 miles.

I informed them that the bike was being rejected as not fit for purpose, that it was of insufficient quality and durability and that I would only accept a refund of the entire purchase price.

I 'was' willing to purchase another bike from them.

Unhappy E-Bike update

I'm going to be returning my bike for a refund (depending on how Halfords respond to it, maybe having to take it further)

Basically, this is the 2nd bike I've had. The first failed after about 450 miles and kept shutting down after a few miles. Requiring you to remove the battery to reboot it.

They replaced the bike as it was only 7-8 weeks old. The 2nd bike has also failed after 500 miles.

Not accepting a replacement again. Refund or another brand of bike.
