LAKECIA BENJAMIN, five-time Grammy nominee, played at lunchtime today at the Savannah Music Festival. She said "I didn't know jazz happened this early." Yet from the start the show, it was like we were in a hurricane without any shelter. So intense. At one point she clapped so hard a bracelet exploded, sending beads flying.

🎷Check out her live content online (the NPR Tiny Desk Concert is good) and albums "Phoenix" and "Phoenix Reimagined", begun after she was almost killed in a car crash and told she may not play the sax again.

🎶 She has at least one other show to do here, but a more important part of the story, I think, is that she will lead a Jazz Academy Masterclass for students in 6th - 12th grades. Part of the festival is to being young people free to see and learn from some of the artists appearing. (One of the reasons I support it.)
