If human behavior is key to biodiversity loss, then our research frameworks must reflect the full complexity of what makes us human.

A Multi-level Analysis" at the Institute for Chemistry and Biology of the Marine Environment - At the ICBM Colloquium in Oldenburg, Dr. Alexander Yendell (Leipzig University / PRO-COAST) offered a sharp analysis of how current research on coastal biodiversity loss handles the human dimension – and where it falls short.
While many studies include variables like education, age, or attitudes, they often treat these factors descriptively and without theoretical depth. Social dynamics are added onto ecological models instead of being integrated into them from the beginning.
Yendell argued that genuine interdisciplinarity means building frameworks together – not just aligning datasets. This also means engaging seriously with concepts like power, emotion, identity and symbolic resistance. One example: Certain ecological measures – such as restrictions on land use or new environmental regulations – may be perceived not just as inconvenient, but as a threat to status, autonomy, or traditional masculinity. This dynamic has been described under the concept of Petromasculinity.
His conclusion: If human behavior is key to biodiversity loss, then our research frameworks must reflect the full complexity of what makes us human.
