The digital transformation of higher #education … for better and for worse
Neil Selwyn @neil_selwyn has an interview with Cathrine Tømte (University of Agder) where they talk about the impacts of #digitisation on #Norwegian #universities, For me it is a reminder that the path of these things is not inevitable and is the result of a sequence of decisions.
[New publication]: A Tale of Twin Transitions: How did we come to think that digitization and sustainability go hand in hand.
A chapter I wrote for a Palgrave Handbook is finally out. This is also a modified version in one of my incoming PhD thesis. From 60' economics to today's European taxonomy, I try to trace back the genealogy of ideas that assumed that digitalisation will result in a more sustainable economy.

The problem with most of what #darzi proposes is that it is eminently sensible but profoundly unexciting - and offers little opportunity for #grift . #publichealth and #preventative measures work well but do not attract support from influential people - unlike #digitisation which tis seen as a 'magic bullet' and has been so for at least a quarter of a century ! The temptation will be to throw effort and money into #digitisation and pay lip service at best to the other stuff.
Earlier this year, 24 professionals with varied skillsets, perspectives & end-use goals for #digitized #fossil #collections data joined at University of Colorado Boulder for a workshop, as part of a project funded by @NSF's #Geosciences #OpenScience #Ecosystem program.

The @EUCommission wants European enterprises to waste more ressources on #BigData, #cloud, and #AI. Because of #digitisation. "In 2023, the uptake of AI, cloud and/or big data by European companies was also well below the Digital Decade target of 75%. Under current trends, only 64% of businesses will use cloud, 50% big data and only 17% AI by 2030." Maybe for a reason? https://ec.europa.eu/commission/presscorner/detail/en/IP_24_3602
This is a scan of my Dad’s school report from King’s High School in Ōtepoti in December 1939 when he was 14. It was his last year of high school as he, like many others, had to work and support the family.
It strikes me how useless these reports are - just a bunch of numbers that seem purely designed to rank pupils. And the comments - “Steady work”. What does that even mean? Still, it’s great to have these.

How can we make digitalisation sustainable?
The Berlin group of the FSFE wants to show an answer to this question at the Umweltfestival 2024 together with @bitsundbaeume_berlin and @be4foss . Come to our stand to learn more about the sustainable use of computers with Free Software. We will also have information about Upcycling Android, Public Money, Public Code and the Fediverse at our booth.
We will be at the Straße des 17. Juni between Siegessäule and Brandenburger Tor on April 28th from 11am to 7pm. Come by and talk to us about Free Software!

In the upcoming session, the spotlight will be on Platoniq's compelling case study, 'Comparte tu rollo Peacebuilding in #colombia undertaken in collaboration with The National Library of Colombia and Historypin. Employing the Impact Playbook value lens, participants can discuss the analysis of this project."
