"As with the dire wolf, the rhino experiment is being watched by skeptics. They question whether genetically engineering a northern white rhino is more of an exercise in technological hubris than genuine conservation."

Nautilus · The Last of Their KindAre efforts to resurrect the northern white rhino more technological hubris than genuine conservation?

'[T]he Romantic idea of nature as an Edenesque space helped justify policies like the forced displacement of indigenous communities to create “protected areas” devoid of human life...

'Without first recognizing the delicate entanglements we have with the world around us, these #conservation strategies are part of the antagonistic approach to #ecology that got us into this mess.'

The Baffler · De-Extinction Rebellion | Leo KimScientists want to control extinction. It will have consequences we can’t even begin to conceive of.

#deExtinction: "The American company #Colossal changed only 14 genes to produce its cute "#direwolf" puppies. Curiously, all 14 are genes with effects on the appearance of animals, being linked to the colour, thickness and length of the fur and the size of the animals.

Is #resurrecting a species now just #cosplaying an extinct animal with a current species? To top it off, George R.R. Martin himself - yes, the author of #GameofThrones - signs the scientific article as well. And he is an investor in the company. He compared the feat to a form of "magic". Only if it's to magically fatten his bank account even more."

As many have commented on, Colossal Biosciences has claimed to have brought dire wolves back from extinction. It is a gross exaggeration. But I want to acknowledge the great desire to bring back extinct animals in some way. I, for one, would love to see new animals similar to extinct animals. I think of all the kids (and adults) who love dinosaurs. It would be awesome to recreate these ancient animals in some way! It's about discovery and experiencing the full power of the animal kingdom.

This point is not to minimize the many real concerns about the de-extinction effort but to give perspective on why some people would want to try.

It's weird to talk about the ecological benefits of #DireWolf #deextinction when the ecosystem they belonged to isn't here any more. Dire wolves ate a bunch of huge animals that also aren't around any more, and the ecosystem was literally an ice age. Hank Green makes the best points I've seen so far. #science #biology #ecology youtube.com/watch?v=Ar0zgedLyTw

“This is a designer dog. This is a genetically modified gray wolf,” says Jacquelyn Gill, a paleoecologist at the University of Maine, who has worked with Shapiro in the past but was not involved in this project. “I have more than 14 Neandertal genes in me, and we wouldn’t call me a Neandertal.” scientificamerican.com/article by @andreatweather.bsky.social‬
