July on my route is ruled by the silver-washed fritillary. With other species waning by then, these large and bright orange #butterflies are made all the more prominent by their tendency to congregate at their favorite spots.

Emergence of the females, particularly the lighter valesina form, also marks the tipping point of summer for me: after this it's mostly just encores from (overwintering) species first seen in early spring.

1) First ever Swallow Prominent (had Lesser SP before)
2) L-album Wainscot
3) Fan-foot (also new for garden)
4) Tiddly tiny Pammene Aurita micromoth

Abysmal numerically, only 16 moths of 13 species … 150+ would not be uncommon in July, which is very concerning from perspective.

Ben Goldfarb's latest piece in High Country News on the desperate struggle to keep a northern California butterfly species alive is a great read. Species recovery is a hard and thankless enough job with the most charismatic mammal - for insects, it's the same work, backwards and in heels, for less money. The people who do it deserve more features like this. hcn.org/issues/55.5/south-enda
